Mewat Area Development Project:
           Mewat Area Development project falls under SPYM's development related project. 


 

SPYM is carrying out community developmental activities in Mewat, Haryana which has about 92% rural population. There are 6 blocks within the project area, Taru, Nuh, Nagina, Ferozpur Jhirka and Punchana in Gurgaon district and Hathin in Faridabad district. Mewat has a surprisingly high level of poverty incidence, according to 1991 census. 62% of rural households in Mewat are below the poverty line, compared with only 37% of Haryana as a whole.

Keeping this in view, SPYM initiated a development project here in association with Mewat Development Agency.

The main objectives of the project are:

  1. Establishment of self-reliant community organisations capable of undertaking developmental activities,

  2. Establishment of women's group (Mahila Mandals) activity involved in community development,

  3. Improvement in women's literacy, general health and well-being.

  4. Formation of self help groups (SHGs), for health implementation of project proposals and activities,

  5. Sensitizing the male folk in the area, about the various aspects of female life styles.

The main activities under this project are:

  1. The focus of the training programme, conducted by SPYM is mainly participatory in approach. It focused essentially on formation and functioning of SHG and Community Mobilization Groups (CMG) which included identification and formation of SHGs, guidelines for linking banks with CMGs, guidelines for financial management, grading criteria for SHG and finally evaluation for phasing out and analysis.
     

  2. Training of selected Sahelis in Nagina and Hathin.
     

  3. Training and skill development of barefoot nurses in the project areas. On the basis of these orientation-training programmes, SPYM did a need assessment and developed a module for the Saheli training programme. Sahelis were also trained on community organisation. Here the main emphasis was on societal analysis, village problems and root causes, identification of women's issues /gender issues, approaches to organising, what is a group's stages, and development of a group, group processes (communication, decision making, conflict-resolution, problem solving) role of a group leader, and a community organiser, principle of participatory planning. 

    Training programmes on gender sensitization was also held at Hathin, which dealt with the meaning and concept of gender, understanding patriarchy and status of women in the project area, gender analysis, division of labour, access and control profile gender needs, identification and focusing on building gender perspective in the project.
     

  4. The SPYM staffs initiated the formation of Villages Dissension Groups (VDGs). The staff were also contemplating on a number of "off farm" and "on farm" activities for the people of Mewat. It procured six khadi units as part of income generation programmes in villages and encouraged people to look for alternate source of employment and income generation.
